(Mateo 28:9-10)

A harmony of the four gospels on the resurrection of Jesus

Dan Barker issued a challenge to Christians in his book Losing Faith in Faith:

HAVE AN EASTER CHALLENGE for Christians. My challenge is simply  this: tell me what happened at Easter. I don't ask for proof. My sincere request  is merely that Christians tell me exactly  what  happened on the day  their most important doctrine was born. Believers should wholeheartedly accept it, for without the resurrection, there is no  Christianity. Paul wrote: “And if Christ is not risen, then is our  preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. And we are even found false witnesses of  God; for we have testified of God that he raised up Christ; whom  he did not raise, if indeed the dead rise not” (1 Corinthians 15:14-15) The conditions of the challenge are simple and reasonable. In each of the four  Gospels, begin on Easter morning and read through to the end of the book:  Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24,  and  John 20-21 Also read  Acts 1:3-12  and Paul's little version of the story in  1 Corinthians 15:3-8 These 165  verses can be read in no time. So, without omitting a single detail from  these separate accounts, he writes a single chronological account of the events  between the resurrection and the ascension: what happened first, second, and so on; who  said what, when, and where those things happened. Since the Gospels do not always give precise times, educated guesses are permissible  The narrative does not have to try to present a  perfect description, it is enough to give at least a plausible account of all the events. Other explanations of the narrative can be added separately between parentheses  The important condition of the challenge, however, is that not a single  Biblical detail can be omitted. Does that seem fair? I myself have tried to meet the challenge. I didn't make it.

 I think let's just start.

Friday in Bethany

And when they returned, (the women) prepared aromatic spices and perfumes. (Luke 23:56)

 -------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------

Saturday in Bethany

And (the women) on the Sabbath rested according to the commandment. (Luke 23:56)

Saturday in Jerusalem

The next day, which is  the day  after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said to him: Lord, we remember that when that deceiver was still alive, he said: “After three days, I am raised. Therefore , he commands that the tomb be secured until the third day, lest his disciples come and steal it from him, and say to the people: "He has risen from the dead"; and the last deception will be worse than the first. Pilate said to them: You have a guard; go, secure it as you know how. And they went and made the sepulcher secure; and in addition to posting the guard, they sealed  the stone.  (Matthew 27:62-66)

-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------

Beginning of the day Sunday in Bethany (After 6:00 pm on Saturday)

After the day of rest, María Magdalena, María, the mother of Jacobo, and Salome, bought aromatic spices to go to anoint him. (Mark 16:1)

Comment: Here you can insert what BTX4 says:  And when they returned, (the women) prepared aromatic spices and ointments, but they rested on Saturday according to the commandment. (Luke 23:56)
But...  Note that the preparation of aromas and ointments occurred after keeping the Sabbath rest. (Footnote to Luke 23:56 of BTX4)

-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------

Sunrise of the day Sunday journey from Bethany to the sepulcher

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. (Matthew 28:1)

But on the first day of the week, at daybreak, the women went to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. (Luke 24:1)

And on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went* early to the tomb, while it was* still dark,… (John 20:1)

And very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. (Mark 16:2)

-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------

And they said to each other: Who will remove the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb? (Mark 16:3)

-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------

Sunday at dawn before the women arrived at the tomb

And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descending from heaven, and coming near, rolled away the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his garment white as snow; and from fear of him the guards trembled and stood as dead. (Matthew 28:2-4)

-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------

When the women arrive at the sepulcher

When they looked up, they saw* that the stone, though it was exceedingly large, had been rolled away. (Mark 16:4)

And they found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb, (Luke 24:2)

and (Mary Magdalene) saw* that the stone had already been rolled away from the tomb. (John 20:1)

-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------

And entering the tomb, (Mark 16:5)

and when they entered, (Luke 24:3)
---------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ----------------
They did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. (Luke 24:3)
-------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------
And it came to pass that while they were perplexed by this, (Luke 24:4)
----------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ---------
they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in white clothing; and they got scared. (Mark 16:5)

suddenly two men dressed in resplendent garments appeared. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground. (Luke 24:4-5)

-------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------

And speaking the angel, he said to the women: You, do not fear; because I know that you seek Jesus, the crucified. (Matthew 28:5)

But he said to them*: Do not be afraid; You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. (Mark 16:6)
-------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------
They said to them: Why do you seek among the dead the one who lives? (Luke 24:5)
-------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------
He's not here, because he was raised, just like he said. (Matthew 28:6)

He is not here, he was raised (Mark 16:6)

He is not here, but was resurrected. Remember how I spoke to you while I was still in Galilee, saying: The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and rise again on the third day. And they remembered his words,  (Luke 24:6-8)

-------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------

Come, see the place where he lay. (Matthew 28:6)

Look at the place where they put him. (Mark 16:6)

-------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------
And go quickly, and
tell  to his disciples that he was  raised from the dead and behold, He goes before you into Galilee; there you will see him.  Behold, I have told you. (Matthew 28:7)

But go,  tell  his disciples and Peter:  He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.  (Mark 16:7)

Why do I mark it in blue what of Galilee? Because it is what the women did not tell the disciples but only told them the part about the angels and that Jesus according to the angels had risen from the dead.

-------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------
And they, going out in full force rushing from the tomb with fear and great joy, they ran to tell his disciples. (Matthew 28:8)

And returning from the tomb, they announced all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.10 They were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary, the mother of James; the other women with them also referred these things to the apostles.11
And to them these words seemed like nonsense, and they did not believe them.  (Luke 24:9-11)

And leaving them, they fled from the tomb, because a tremor and terror had seized them; and they didn't say anything to anyone because they were afraid.  (Mark 16:8)

Then (Mary Magdalene) ran* and went* to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them*: They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. (John 20:2)

The explanation for this would be that the women tell the disciples that angels appeared to them and told them that Jesus of Nazareth had risen from the dead, for the disciples this was nonsense and they did not believe them as Luke says this. fear seizes the women and they did not tell the disciples that they had to go to Galilee and that there Jesus of Nazareth would appear to them as Mark says, and then Mary Magdalene tells Peter and John and the other disciples also that they had taken Jesus from the tomb and that they did not know where they had laid him. End of explanation.

-------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------
But Peter got up and ran to the grave; (Luke 24:12)

So Peter and the other disciple went out and went toward the tomb. 4 The two ran together, but the other disciple outran Peter, and reached the tomb first, 5 and leaning down to look in , he saw* the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. (John 20:3-5)
------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- --
Then came* also Simon Peter after him, (John 20:6)

and stooping (Peter) to look in, he saw* only the linen wrappings; (Luke 24:12)
-------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------
and (Peter) entered the tomb, and saw* the linen wrappings laid there,7 and the cloth which had been on the head of Jesus, not put with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a separate place.8 Then he also entered the other disciple, the one who had reached the tomb first, and saw and believed. 9 Because they had not yet understood the Scripture, that Jesus must rise from the dead. (John 20:6-9)
------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- --
and he (Pedro) went to his house, marveling at what had happened. (Luke 24:12)

The disciples then went back to their own. (John 20:10)
--------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------
When Peter and John arrive where the gathered disciples were, they told them all these things, then two disciples leave for Emmaus.
-------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------
What the disciples of the road to Emmaus :
And also some women among us amazed us; for when they went to the tomb early in the morning,23 and not finding his body, they came saying that they had also seen an apparition of angels who said that he was alive.24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found him just as the women had said; but they did not see him. (Luke 24:22-24)
------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- --

But Mary was outside, weeping by the tomb; and as she wept, she bent down and looked into the tomb;12 and she saw* two angels clothed in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head and one at the feet.13 And they said to her*: Woman, why are you crying? She said* to them: Because they have taken my Lord away, and I do not know where they have put him.14 As she said this, she turned and saw* Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus.15 Jesus* said to her: Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for? Thinking it was the gardener, she said to him*: Lord, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away.16 Jesus said to her*: Mary! Turning around, she said to him* in Hebrew: Rabboni! (which means Master). 17 Jesus said to him*: Do not hold me back, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers, and tell them: "

And after he had risen, very early on the first day of the week, Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.10 And she went and told those who had been with him, who were wailing and weeping.11 When they heard that he was alive and that she had seen him, they refused to believe it. (Mark 16:9-11)

-------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------

[Then Mary Magdalene and the other Mary go to Bethany (perhaps) or It may also be that Mary Magdalene together with the other Mary returned to the tomb (perhaps)] And behold, Jesus met them, saying: Hail! And they, coming near, embraced his feet and worshiped him.10 Then Jesus said to them *:
Do not be afraid  Go, tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.  (Matthew 28:9-10)

Another comment, Do not be afraid of verse ten can also be translated Cesad de Temer according to Francisco Lacueva's Interlinear New Testament, the New American Standard Bible says that an alternative to "Do not be afraid" is " Let to fear

". The Bible of the Americas translates better into <<And here is what>> than in the interlinear New Testament of Francisco Lacueva. This is the second appearance of Jesus to the women, this time, to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary. It is the second appearance of Jesus to Mary Magdalene, in the first she did not recognize him but here she recognizes him immediately, Jesus had to go out to meet them so that they tell his disciples about Galilee since they did not tell him out of fear.
-------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------
And while they were going, I here, some of the guard went into the city and informed the chief priests of all that had happened.12 And after meeting with the elders and deliberating with them, they gave a large amount of money to the soldiers,13 saying: Say this: "His disciples came by night and stole the body while we slept."14 And if this comes to the ears of the governor, we will convince him and save you trouble.15 They took the money and did as they had been instructed. And this saying has spread widely among the Jews to this day. (Matthew 28:11-15)
------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- --
And behold, that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they were conversing among themselves about all these things that had happened. He himself came near and walked with them. 16 But their eyes were veiled so that they would not recognize him. 17 And he said to them, What are these discussions that you have among yourselves as you walk? And they stopped, looking sad. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to him: Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened in it in these days? 19 Then he said to them: What things? And they said to him: Those referring to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a powerful prophet in deed and in word before God and all the people; 20 and how the chief priests and our rulers handed him over to death sentence and crucified him. 21 But we hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. But besides all this, this is the third day since these things happened.22 And also some women among us astonished us; for when they went to the tomb early in the morning,23 and not finding his body, they came saying that they had also seen an apparition of angels who said that he was alive.24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found him just as the women had said; but they did not see him. 25 Then Jesus said to them: O fools and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have said! 26 Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer all these things and enter into his glory? 27 And beginning with Moses and continuing with all the prophets, he explained to them all the scriptures concerning him. and he pretended to go further.29 And they urged him, saying: Stay with us, for it is evening, and the day has already declined. And he went in to stay with them.30 And it came to pass that as he sat down at table with them, he took bread, and blessed it; and breaking it, he gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; but He disappeared from their presence. 32 And they said to each other, Did not our hearts burn within us as He spoke to us on the road, when He opened the Scriptures to us? 33 And rising up that very hour, they returned to Jerusalem. , he explained to them concerning Him in all the scriptures. 28 They approached the village to which they were going, and He pretended to go further. declined. 28 They approached the village to which they were going, and He pretended to go further. declined. 33 And rising up that very hour, they returned to Jerusalem. , for it is evening, and the day has already declined. And she went in to stay with them.30 And it came to pass that as he sat down at table with them, he took bread, and blessed it; and breaking it, he gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; but He disappeared from their presence. 32 And they said to each other, Did not our hearts burn within us as He spoke to us on the road, when He opened the Scriptures to us? 33 And rising up that very hour, they returned to Jerusalem. , for it is evening, and the day has already declined. 33 And rising up that very hour, they returned to Jerusalem. ,
And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34  saying, It is true that the Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.    35 And they recounted his experiences on the road, and how they had recognized him in the breaking of the bread. (Luke 24:13-35)

who appeared to Cephas  (1 Corinthians 15:5)

Thomas leaves the house where the disciples were gathered
--------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ---------------------
Sunday night 36  While they related these things, (Luke 24:36)

19    When night came on that same day, the first of the week, and the doors of the place where the disciples were being closed for fear of the Jews, (John 20:19)
---------- -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ------------
Jesus stood in the midst of them, and said to them: Peace to you. (Luke 24:36)

Jesus came and stood in their midst, and said to them*: Peace to you. (John 20:19)
--------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------
37  But they, terrified and frightened, thought they saw a spirit. 38  And He said to them: Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39  Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; touch me and see, because a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have. (Luke 24:37-39)
 ------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

40 And when he said this he showed them his hands and feet. 41  As they still did not believe it because of joy and were astonished, she said to them: Do you have something to eat here? (Luke 24:40-41) 20

And saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. (John 20:20)
-------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------- 42  Then they presented him with part of a roasted fish. 43  And he He he took it and ate before them. 44

And he said to them: This is what I told you when I was still with you: that everything that is written about me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled. 45  Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46  and he said to them: Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and rise from the dead on the third day; 47  and that in his name repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be preached to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48  You are witnesses of these things. 49  And behold, I will send upon you the promise of my Father; but you remain in the city until you are endued with power from on high. (Luke 24:42-49)
-------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- -------
21  Jesus then said to them again: Peace to you; as the Father has sent me, so I send you. 22  After saying this, he breathed on them and *said to them: Receive the Holy Spirit. 23  Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; whose sins you retain, they are retained. (John 20:21-23)
------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------
24  Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25  Then the other disciples said to him: We have seen the Lord! But he said to them: If I do not see in his hands the mark of the nails, and I put my finger in the place of the nails, and put my hand in his side, I will not believe. (John 20:24-25) ------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------
26  Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas with them. And while the doors were closed, Jesus came* and stood in the midst of them, and said: Peace to you. 27  Then he said * to Thomas: Put your finger here, and look at my hands; stretch out your hand here and put it into my side; and do not be incredulous, but a believer. 28  Thomas answered and said to him: My Lord and my God! 29  Jesus *said to him: Because you have seen me, have you believed? Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed. (John 20:26-29) and then at twelve; (1 Corinthians 15:5)
------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- --------------------
30And many other signs did Jesus also in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; 31  but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and so that by believing, you may have life in his name. (John 20:30-31)
------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------
  in Galilee

After this, Jesus manifested himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he manifested himself in this way:  Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael of Cana of Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others from his disciples.  Simon Peter said to them*: I'm going fishing. They told him*: We are also going with you. They went and got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.  When it was already dawn, Jesus was on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.  Then Jesus *said to them, Children, do you have any fish? They answered him: No. And He said to them: Cast the net to the right side of the boat and you will find fish. So they threw it out, and they couldn't get it out because of the large number of fish.  Then that disciple whom Jesus loved said* to Peter, It is the Lord! So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girded on his clothes (because he had taken them off so he could work), and he threw himself into the sea.  But the other disciples came in the boat, because they were not far from land, but about a hundred meters, dragging the net full of fish.  So when they got down to land, they saw* coals already laid and a fish placed on them, and bread. 10  Jesus *said to them, Bring some of the fish you have caught now. eleven Simon Peter climbed into the boat, and pulled the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and though there were so many, the net was not broken. 12  Jesus said to them: Come and have breakfast. None of the disciples dared to ask him: Who are you?, knowing that he was the Lord. 13  Jesus* came, took* the bread and gave it* to him; and he did the same with the fish. 14  This was already the third time that Jesus manifested himself to the disciples after being raised from the dead. 15  Then when they had finished eating, Jesus said* to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? Peter said to him*: Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Jesus said to him*: Feed my lambs. 16 And he said to him a second time: Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter said to him*: Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Jesus said to him*: Shepherd my sheep. 17  He said to him * for the third time: Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was saddened because the third time he said to him: Do you love me? And he answered him: Lord, you know everything; you know I love you. Jesus said to him*: Feed my sheep. 18  Truly, truly, I tell you: when you were younger you dressed and walked where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands and another will dress you and take you where you do not want to go. 19  This he said, implying the kind of death with which Peter would glorify God. And having said this, he said to him *: Follow me. twenty Turning around, Peter saw* that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them, the one who had leaned on Jesus' chest at supper and had said, Lord, who is it that will betray you? 21  Then Peter, seeing him, *said to Jesus: Lord, what about this man? 22  Jesus said to him*: If I want him to stay until I come, what to you? Follow me. 23  For this reason the saying spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die; but Jesus did not tell him that he would not die, but: If I want him to stay until I come, what to you? 24  This is the disciple who bears witness to these things and the one who wrote this, and we know that his testimony is true. 25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written* in detail, I think even the world itself could* not contain the books that would be written*. (John 21:1-25)
------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------
16  But the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain that Jesus had pointed out to them. 17  When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18  And Jesus approaching, he spoke to them, saying: All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19  Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20  teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, until the end of the world. (Matthew 28:16-20)
------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------
then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still alive, but some of whom are already asleep; (1 Corinthians 15:6)
------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- --------------------
after he appeared to James, (1 Corinthians 15:7)
----------------- -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ------
Jerusalem then to all the apostles, (1 Corinthians 15:7)

50  Then he led them out of the city, to near Bethany, and raising his hands, he blessed them.  51

And it came to pass that while he was blessing them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. (Luke 24:50-51)
1 The first account I wrote, Theophilus, dealt with everything that Jesus began to do and teach,  until the day he was received up, after he had given instructions by the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.  To these also, after his suffering, he presented himself alive with many convincing proofs,  appearing to them for forty days and speaking to them concerning the kingdom of God  And gathering them together, he commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father: Which, he said to them, ye have heard of me;  For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days. Then those who were assembled asked him, saying, Lord, will you restore the kingdom to Israel at this time?  And He said to them: It is not for you to know the times or seasons which the Father has set by his own authority;  but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.  After he had said these things, he was lifted up while they were looking, and a cloud received him and hid him from their eyes. 10  And while they were looking fixedly at the sky as He ascended, it came to pass that two men in white garments appeared next to them, 11 who said to them: Galilean men, why are you looking at the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way, just as you have seen him go into heaven. 12  So they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey. 13  When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying, Peter, John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas son of James. 14  These were all with one accord, continually praying together with the women, and with Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. (Acts 1:1-14)

52  After worshiping him, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53  and were always in the temple praising God. (Luke 24:52-53)
